The five open-ended interview questions were first, content analysed for frequency of mention within each question, and then second, analysed for frequency of mention across the questions. The derived concepts were then grouped for common meaning. For example, the statements more of a team atmosphere and work as a team were both classified under the general heading of team work. Nine concepts were formed by this grouping. Table Pandora Silver Bead - Y32 shows the nine concepts ordered by total frequency of mention. The top three most frequently mentioned concepts were also those reoccurring across more questions.Thought and action focuses more on the means including various statements concerning attitudes, behaviour and quality methods.

The enthusiasm for greater participation by doctors in management training and development was also reflected in the high number of positive responses from doctors in all four categories. Closer examination of which courses had been taken highlighted a number of areas of concern. As might have been predicted, the smallest number of doctors to have undertaken management development courses were senior registrars. Despite their obvious enthusiasm Pandora Silver Bead - YS attending management courses, there is a need for a more co-ordinated approach to developing a standardized management development programme throughout Wales. While a number of senior registrars had been given the opportunity to attend two or even three courses, it was evident from the wide selection of courses attended that there was no obvious planning involved as to their appropriateness.

The slow subconscious acquisition of the business ethic can assume too great an influence on clinical decision making to the detriment of patients.Obtaining funding to attend such courses did not appear to be a major problem for senior registrars. However, it is of concern that, having attended these courses, senior registrars do not value them. The majority of senior registrars said that these courses were only "of some value" or "valuable". The number of senior registrars who found the courses "very valuable" was disappointingly small. Thus, while considerable amounts of time and money are Pandora Silver Bead - YN spent on attempting to meet the management development needs of future consultants, it has been done in an unstructured, haphazard manner and appears to be of little value to recipients.

Similar findings were reported for medical managers, trust consultants and DMU consultants with only minor variations. These doctors identified a variety of courses which they attended, many of which were in-house. Again, although financing of courses appeared to be no problem, the perceived value of the courses Pandora Silver Bead - Y45 rated only slightly higher than those attended by senior registrars. The majority of trust consultants have attended management development courses only during their time as senior registrars. Very few followed up this initial exposure to management development and very few had any plans to attend future courses. By contrast, senior registrars clearly had plans to undertake further management development courses, but apparently many required guidance on courses offered, funding and availability. Whether the latter was as a result of ignorance on the part of senior registrars or a consequence of greater financial constraints on postgraduate study budgets was beyond the scope of this study.
