This city has never been known as a golf hotbed, even before Hurricane Katrina. Its culture and history were always what mattered most: the music, the French Quarter, the Mississippi River. But there are enclaves where golf matters a lot, and one of them revolves around the Joe Bartholomew Golf Course in the Pandora Gold Bead - K14 part of town, which was ruined by 10 feet of flood waters five years ago.Sometime in the next few weeks bureaucrats from the city of New Orleans will make a final inspection tour of the course's million renovation and sign documents that, in effect, accept delivery from the contractor. No one knows exactly how long it will take after that for the course actually to reopen.Before Katrina the same crew gathered under a shed near the clubhouse the lucky ones after a round of golf. They usually played dominoes.

The city could decide to run the course itself, as it did before Katrina, but it also intends to issue in January a request for proposals from outside entities to manage Pandora Gold Bead - J85 course. Those proposals will take time to process. And it's not as if the city government under recently installed Mayor Mitch Landrieu is without distractions, with $700 million in other high-priority projects under way, many of them Katrina-related.One group that already has expressed interest in managing Joe Bartholomew, at no cost to the city, is the New Orleans First Tee chapter, with an important assist from the PGA Tour. The Tour's golf-course-properties unit last week signed a memorandum of understanding with First Tee to provide its expertise and consulting services free, should First Tee be selected to operate the course.

The work already done includes an expansive double ended practice range and short-game training area.The thing I'm trying to sell the city on is that it's not just about the First Tee, it's about the community here.It's about leveraging the legacy of Joe Bartholomew himself. Joe Bartholomew was the Louis Armstrong of golf. He was that significant to this city. A major non-profit initiative to build a new championship course at City Park, also inundated after Katrina, is at an Pandora Gold Bead - K24 stage. That project would use profits to support the surrounding low-income neighborhood, based on the successful model in Atlanta of East Lake Golf Club, site of the PGA Tour Championship.For now, however, the locals at Joe Bartholomew just want their course back.

The Senate passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act this week. The measure, which passed 73-25, would substantially overhaul FDA's oversight and regulation Pandora Gold Bead - JJ food safety by increasing its resources, inspection power and field staff. The bill only covers food within FDA's jurisdiction and doesn't regulate meat, poultry or shelled eggs, which are the responsibility of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.The bill includes an amendment by Sen. Jon Tester and Sen. Kay Hagan to limit applicability of large portions of the bill to firms selling less than $500,000 worth of food each year. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association expressed opposition to the measure because of that amendment, basing exemptions on size, location and proximity to the market sets a dangerous precedent for our nation's safety system.
