Beneficial and detrimental correlates of interpersonal disagreement have been postulated and documented. The conclusion: conflict is both bad and good. The evidence for these paradoxical effects is summarized. In this article, we argue that the consequences of conflict for individuals depend on its frequency, the way in which it is Pandora Chains, and the quality of the relationship in which it arises. Non-linear patterns of association are hypothesized such that constructive conflicts, particularly those arising in supportive relationships, should predict more beneficial and fewer detrimental outcomes. This study examined developmental change and variation across social context in the quality of children's conversations, with a dual focus on conflict and inner state talk. Each measure was coded as a proportion of total talk, using transcripts from 57 three- to six-year-olds, filmed at home at two time points in two Gold Beads (Charms) contexts . Frequencies of conflict and IST did not change between time points. However, IST changed in function, such that the proportion of IST within explanations increased over time. At each time point: children talked about inner states more often with younger siblings than with mothers; and conflict was more strongly associated with talk about children's own inner states within conversations with mothers than with younger siblings.Together, these findings highlight the need to consider both conflict and IST as relationship-specific constructs.
