Despite its reputation for top-notch engineering and meticulous maintenance of jet engines for carriers, Rolls-Royce then faced a major challenge. While the company was winning plaudits from investors for expanding its franchise and winning billions of dollars of new business in the fast-growing regional-Tiffany Nature Daisy Earrings and Necklace Set segment, serious operational troubles cropped up on Brazilian-made Embraer 135 and 145 jetliners.

From Brazil to the U.S to Europe, government regulators collected information about various types of hazardous in-flight engine malfunctions on the twin-engine commuter planes, built by Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA and powered by Rolls-Royce AE 3007 engines. Safety experts became particularly concerned about the tendency of some of the engines to suddenly shut down without warning, often during takeoffs or Dove Pendent Necklace and Earrings Set climbing away from airports. By the fall of 2000, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration had collected details of at least seven spontaneous shutdowns in the air due to defective engine-control hardware; five more engines that were turned off by pilots because of bearing failures; and three flights after which pilots couldn't shut offTiffany & Co Atlas Set engine. The FAA ordered Embraer and Rolls-Royce to take swift action. The fear was that without any input from pilots, both engines of a regional jet could stop working and result in a catastrophe.

But Rolls-Royce rolled out its technical experts. At the urging of the jet manufacturer, the engine-maker and various airlines, the FAA made the controversial decision to allow U.S. carriers to continue operating the affected jets so long as at least one engine on each plane was fitted with upgraded digital controls. At the time, a high-ranking agency official acknowledged the planes didn't "fully meet the design requirements" mandated Elsa Peretti Open Heart Pendant in Sterling Silver federal rules and regulations. But they remained in service, he said, because the FAA determined the threat of a dual-engine failure "was very minimal." Pilot-union leaders, federal crash investigators and outside safety experts strongly objected.

Around the same time, the FAA issued an emergency safety directive ordering airlines to take extra precautions to prevent oil leaks on the same family of engines during cold-weather starts and takeoffs. Regulators also issued separate orders for aggressive inspections of certain bearings on the Rolls-Royce engines prone to premature failures, and mandated installation of new sensors to prevent oil-pressure discrepancies from prompting pilots to halt takeoffs.

Students have been guided, cajoled, coaxed and whatever else is necessary to move them toward their goals. Using voice recognition software, artificial intelligence and Bluetooth technology, AMI not only responds to voice commands, but when thanked answers, "You're welcome." According to Michael Zohourian, Dean of Engineering programs at the Fremont campus, "Senior projects are not only about the 'wow factor' - students have to demonstrate elegance of design, technical merit and marketability."

For DeVry Calgary student Fady Khaled, his senior project was the culmination of a childhood dream. The electrical engineering student created Nova 5, a compact robot mounted with a camera that combines visual images with sound waves and infrared sensors and may be fitted with an Tiffany 1837 Lock pendant nose to sniff out harmful gases, making it useful in such emergency situations as mine collapses or fires.Khaled saw an opportunity "to build something that saves lives, that's the bottom line." Employers seeing the robot at the campus Senior Project Fair apparently agreed. "It's absolutely brilliant," says Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicle Systems President Don Matthews.
