A LITTLE Bar-Tabac-Presse draped in lottery ads on the corner of a run-down street; a freshly built yet deserted roundabout beside green fields; three empty plastic chairs lined up inside the window of a boucherie-charcuterie. Such humdrum details of everyday small-town France have been captured in 36 Silver Beads (Charms) colour photographs by Raymond Depardon, a French film-maker and photographer, currently on display in a gem of an exhibition at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, part of the Paris photo season.

Not for Mr Depardon the dreamy France of cobblestones and cathedrals. Since 2004 he has regularly travelled the back roads of the country, starting on the windswept northern beaches near Calais, packing his old wooden view camera and sleeping bag into the back of his van. He picked a journey through what he calls "in-between" France, the small towns and once-rural parts now invaded by urban and commercial creep, in order to record the deserted, domestic corners unvisited by foreign tourists and uncelebrated by the French. The result is at once wholly familiar and yet jarringly at odds with most conceptions of Silver/Gold Beads (Charms) country, and all the more refreshing for it.

One subject is the garish purple decor of the salon de coiffure on a nondescript village street (why does France have so many hairdressers?), another the Communist Party posters plastered to a rain-streaked wall. In one arresting photograph, an undistinguished little house is captured against a flawless blue sky, its rural isolation spoiled by Pandora Silver Bead main road that roars past its front door. The flattened quality of the image gives the house an added ghostliness. That the accumulated impression has an American flavour is not coincidental: Mr Depardon gives an explicit nod to the influence of American photographers such as Paul Strand and Walker Evans, particularly the latter's Depression photographs of 1930s rural America.

Hung closely together in a Pandora Gold Bead room, the two-metre-wide images form a panorama that defies French picture-postcard romanticism. The photographs are mostly empty of people, with a silence and solitude about them that is enlivened by the odd touch of humour and warmed by some vibrant colour. Mr Depardon says he wanted to flee the France of regional specialites, so beloved of tourist guides and political campaigns, and reveal the commonality of everyday France.

The point is not where the photographs were taken: the places are identified only in an annex at the end. It is that the muddle of telegraph wires, brash shop signs, half-empty corner cafes, wrought-iron balconies, decrepit garages, supermarket trolleys and car parks is the backbone of all of France, the bits of the country that Mr Depardon seems to urge visitors to acknowledge as they motor through on their way to somewhere else.

When art lovers think of the early 20th-century movement known as École de Paris, such Eastern European Jewish superstars as Marc Chagall, Moïse Kisling and Chaïm Soutine come to mind. All these celebrated artists went to France for inspiration, instruction and exaltation. Their contemporaries, however, Pandora Gold Bead - K03 dozens of infinitely less famous Jewish artists of real quality, such as Joachim Weingart, Jerzy Ascher and Henryk Epstein.

The continuing obscurity, until now, of many of these talents is as much due to the crushing weight of exile as to the Holocaust, as both fates affected all the artists at Villa la Fleur in one way or another. Such obscurity may soon lessen, thanks to one passionate Polish collector: property development executive Marek Roefler, who in May opened Villa la Fleur, a small museum just outside Warsaw, featuring highlights from his collection of hundreds of paintings by École de Paris artists, most of them Jewish.

While currently open only by appointment, with Pandora Gold Bead - J74 modest website and a Facebook page, Villa la Fleur, a graciously light and airy suburban home originally built in 1906, is garnering considerable local excite ment in a city still scarred by World War II, heavily laden with memorials that explain how more than 3.4 million Polish Jews were so efficiently slaughtered that today's Jewish population in Poland has been estimated at only 20,000.

In 2012, the much anticipated new Museum of the History of Polish Jews, designed by Finnish architects Rainer Mahlamäki and Ilmari Lahdelma, is scheduled to open on the site of the Warsaw Ghetto, but unlike Villa la Fleur, which presents art for its own sake, this will be a historical museum, with more wartime horrors displayed, providing yet more occasions for grieving. Warsaw's Jewish Historical Institute offers a carefully chosen permanent exhibit of "Jewish Artists in Warsaw, 1918-1939," yet these artists, too, are naturally presented within the context of appalling historical tragedy. Like the statues outside Yad Vashem, any artworks presented in a museum that is chiefly intended to commemorate appalling Pandora Gold Bead - J71 suffering must put art on a secondary plane of importance. By extension, this, in retrospect, rewrites the lives of artists according to how they involuntarily died, rather than how and why they lived.

By contrast, Villa la Fleur is an exuberant display of joy, reuniting in Poland part of the celebratory gusto of prewar Jewish painters who, unlike so-called "Holocaust composers," have yet to enjoy widespread revival. Last July, the newspaper "Le Monde" devoted a mocking article, "Philosemitism Without Any Jews," to how, suddenly and inexplicably, things Jewish appear to be all the rage in Cracow, where Jewish festivals abound and even a Pandora Gold Bead - J27 bookstore (run by Catholics, since there are no Jews to staff such a venture) opened. Though also run by non-Jews, Villa la Fleur offers more concrete, permanent evidence of genuine Jewish culture, not sad nostalgia for what is permanently lost and now lamented.

"End of an Age" is a sequel to "The Art of Illusion," Merkley's show that recently closed in Idaho State University's Transition Gallery. Both consist of new work never seen before.

Best known for her realistic oil and watercolor portraits, Merkley also addresses the need for art that makes a statement. Photography is an alternate means to this end, and Merkley Pandora Gold Bead - JG creating collages in this medium prior to the invention of computer programs like Photoshop.

The artist explains her work in this exhibit. "Ages" in human civilization are said to last for approximately 2,000 years. If so, the Mayan culture on this continent predated Christianity in the "Old World" by an age.

During that period, Mayan high priests made predictions based on an incredibly advanced knowledge of astronomy. They cited the year 2012 as the "end time" for our current age, due to complex effects of a rare and imminent galactic alignment. Christianity has interpreted the same juncture as a moral issue.

How much of the turbulence we Pandora Gold Bead - J89 experiencing on our planet today is the result of such cosmological events or a manifestation of synchronistic "parallel universes"?

This show of photo collages explores the symbolism and emotion of such questions in a visual format. It represents the preColumbian Mesoamerican belief system as it was replaced by Catholicism.

"Now at another apocalyptic juncture, we are faced with the entropy of Western civilization and the continuing struggle of the human spirit to fulfill its purpose in the universe," Merkley said. "Mayans, and also Hopi, did not see this as the 'end of the world' but rather the beginning of a new age."

Merkley is an artist of national recognition who Pandora Gold Bead - J47 painted, taught, exhibited, garnered dozens of prizes, taken commissions and sold her work out of Pocatello for most of: her adult life. She has bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts.

Merkley also holds master's degrees in anthropology, education, and political science, with Native American and Mesoamerican emphases. She has traveled widely and worked with several programs for environmental conservation and cultural preservation in Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador. All of Merkley's degrees are from Idaho State University.

Arc Resources Unlimited (ARU) is an employment services program of The Arc of Monmouth. ARU's team of professionals assists people who have disabilities in finding a job, reflective of their skills, abilities and talents and continues support during the training process, and on an as needed basis, after the person has become successfully employed. In ARU's quest to promote the skills, talents, and dreams of people with disabilities, the collaboration with VSA New Jersey was a natural progression. The ARC of Monmouth received funding from the Monmouth County Pandora Gold Bead Council, TD Bank Charitable Foundation and NJ Natural Gas to provide art classes to people with disabilities and to assist in exhibiting, promoting and retailing their art at the Red Horse Gallery, located within the Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold.

When discussing the piece with Palmer, he said, "drawing is dangerous', referring to the ways in which art can say so much with so little.

In Palmer's words, he said the work was a response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti that crumbled Port-Au-Prince last January.

An event that he felt Pandora Silver Bead aligned to after his experiences with the Haitian artists who came to Roktowa on residency last summer.

Palmer left much of the piece up for interpretation but walked The Weekly Gleaner through his work, pointing out feet that connected to hands and overlapped with lines that composed faces, creating a visual chaos of events that make the work visually appealing.

Nonetheless, the work is unorthodox in content. "With things coming out of you, people try to say it's not good, they try and keep you down," Palmer said, aware that his work may be received with scepticism by its viewers.

At the centre of the painting, a grinning king stares back at its viewer with wide almond-shaped eyes and bushy eyebrows. When asked what the king represents, Pandora Silver/Gold Bead stepped back and said, "It can't be translated."

Luckily, the new gallery serves as a space for art enthusiasts to have their own experience with the piece, as art is intended to.

Much an art installation in itself, the gallery space, located at 60 Knutsford Boulevard, provides sanctuary from the hustling hum of its corporate surroundings and as Lacey suggested, "brings freshness and warmth to the corporate building."

The Maine College of Art soon bought it to use for classroom and studio space. But after it completed renovating the former Porteous department store, a Pandora Gold Bead - J81 closer to downtown, the Baxter building was no longer needed. It went on the market about the time the economy began to tank.

Northland Enterprises had the building under contract for about 18 months, searching for enough tenants to assure banks and investors that the renovation would make financial sense, said Josh Benthien, one of the partners in the development group. Robert C. S. Monks, a board member of MaineToday Media, is also a partner in Northland.

It was originally envisioned as a place where artists, photographers and web designers could set up offices and studios and share some of the larger common spaces.

But finding enough tenants to fill at least 75 percent of the building while the economy was bad -- and letting the tenants know it could be a couple of years before the building was ready -- left the investors ready to surrender their deposit and cancel the sale, Benthien said.

Coleman's interest revived Pandora Gold Bead - J23 project, he said.

"We had a very foggy vision of what (the building) could be, and John (Coleman) had a clearer vision," he said.

Having a tenant enabled the developers to nail down a plan for the rehab and come up with a price: $4.8 million.

Benthien said about $1.1 million of the cost was offset by federal and city tax credits for renovating the historic structure, a small city grant, and a creative-economy Pandora Gold Bead - JD district that steers part of the property taxes to pay off a loan that filled a gap in the financing.

Seeing the building filled with workers -- VIA Group has about 70 -- helps erase the memory of the project's uncertainty, Benthien said.

For Coleman, his thinking-out-loud idea now makes business sense. The lease on the Baxter building costs less than what it did to rent the company's former quarters, on Danforth Street. The per-square-foot cost is about one-quarter of what the company pays for space in its New York office.

Plus, at the end of his short walk to work each morning, Coleman can recall what drew him to the site in the first place.

"You really felt the decades of service," Coleman said. "Every time I walked into this building -- I'm a big romantic at heart -- it was so dramatic and beautiful."

About Eleven Visionaries and One Submarine

The magazine, Raw Vision, describes "visionary" or Pandora Gold Bead - J41 artists as artists who invent their own forms and techniques and create private worlds. The art brut in this show is not made to please the desires of the viewers, but meant as a tool to fulfill the artist's desire for self-expression through art. The authentic art is multi-layered, and invites the viewers into other worlds. It leads to the question: How would art be different today if surrealist artists like Max Ernst, Paul Klee and André Breton had not been inspired by the art of psychiatric patients 90 years ago?

When 26-year-old David Alfaro Pandora Gold Bead - J09 repudiated easel art back in 1922, he wasn't simply attempting to rally support for mural painting. He was also expressing his political views. Along with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, Siqueiros was one of "Los Tres Grandes" (the three giants) of the form, but the Communist Party leader and union organizer was considered the most radical.

The familiar sights, sounds and food -- and free admission for seniors and the disabled -- attracted a large crowd Wednesday on opening day of The Big Fresno Fair.

An overcast sky, light breezes and temperatures around 70 made the afternoon comfortable for fairgoers who enjoyed gyros, livestock, art exhibits and music.

"It's not really hot. It's not Pandora Gold Bead - K19 cold," Barbara Wernet said. "You couldn't ask for a better day."

Wernet and her husband, John, said they have been going to the fair since the 1940s.

"We haven't missed a year in ... good grief," she said, pausing as her husband completed her thought, "since I can remember."

The Fresno couple finished off 12 "delicious" soft tacos between them.

A fair food tradition was a priority for Carolyne and Richard Lopez of Fresno.

At Yosemite Station, Fresno residents Myrtle Goens and Lois Stearne -- who had a quilt on display at the fair -- took a break from the exhibits to eat before heading to their next destination.

"We're going to go and watch the horse races," Stearne said, "not gamble, just watch."

Goens quickly interjected, "Well, I'm not saying I'm not going to gamble. She's speaking for herself."

At the Pandora on sale Stage, David Navarro of Fresno showed off his dance moves as the Diamonds in the Rough Band played "La Bamba" and "Twist and Shout."

"I love to dance. That's why I'm here. I've got to liven up these people and get them going," he said of those watching the band.

Wednesday was the first time that free-admission day was combined for people over 62 and people with disabilities. That likely was the reason for the large turnout, said Lauri King, a fair deputy manager.

"All in all, this has been a Pandora Chains day," she said.

Nancy and Bob McGuyer drove from their Visalia home to ramble around the fairgrounds and look at the exhibits before taking a break to eat.

"I just like the atmosphere," she said, "where everyone is having a good time and not worrying about their problems."

"We are honored to organize and present Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior, the first major exhibition to explore the Vaishnava tradition in art," said Frist Center Executive Director Susan H. Edwards, Ph.D. "The material is incredibly deep and rich. As word of the exhibition has spread, the Indian community, worldwide, has been enthusiastic in its support. Zuhandenheit, de Zak Kitnick (Los Angeles, 1984) destaca en primera instancia por su carácter lúdico. Kitnick ha tomado varias estanterías metálicas, de esas que abundan en Home Depot, IKEA y otras y las ha armado una dentro de otra anulando la funcionalidad de las mismas, o más bien desplazándola del mero sentido utilitario al estético. El sentido de transferencia en esta pieza está asociado también al hecho oportunista de que muchos comerciantes aprovechen el ''instinto creativo'' de los compradores para reducir costos de producción asociados a ensamblaje que ahora son transferidos al comprador.

This city has never been known as a golf hotbed, even before Hurricane Katrina. Its culture and history were always what mattered most: the music, the French Quarter, the Mississippi River.
