One of Mr. Welu's talents is the way he uses his mastery of fine art and his mastery of the history of the Worcester Art Museum to make the experience of visiting the museum unique, said J. Christopher Collins, the former president of the museum's board of trustees.

He served as president of the Association of Art Museum Directors and chairman of the accreditation commission of the American Association of Museums. This weekend will offer Tulsans the chance to check out three new art shows and catch up with one that opened last week.

The show already open is "Breitling PAN Frecce Tricolori QUARTZ Chronograph BT-99: Stream of Consciousness," a collection of new mixed-media works by Tulsa artist Nancy Carlson, now on display at the Tulsa Artists' Coalition Gallery, 9 E. Brady St.

In her artist's statement, Carlson said the inspiration for this body of work came from "BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, our backyard, (which) has heightened our concerns about our country's energy policies. Like most of us, I am interested in ways to better conserve energy and limit the effects of environmental damage."

Harris described her work as her attempt to "Breitling PAN Frecce Tricolori QUARTZ Chronograph BT-99 the essence" of whatever she chooses to paint rather than mimicking the photograph of the subject. Her goals include "creating images that are serene and sustainable in an ongoing everyday atmosphere."

Shaw, a native New Yorker who has lived in northern California for the past quarter century, has been known to spend as much as five years on a given image, building up the image's surface through layers and layers of paint, some of which he allows to literally bake onto the canvas.

"I want to make paintings that are as compelling from 6 inches away as they are from 25 feet," Shaw said in his artist's statement. "The work always has to be somehow ahead of me. Humphries calls his work "Painted Atrocities" -- depicting in childlike imagery and primary colors examples of the evils that people do. Members of the local Muslim community with whom she has discussed the project have been entiiusiastic about it, says Qamer, "and have been asking when they can see the project."

Qamer says the group has focused "on things common among us, rather than what divides us. ... We think the conflict in the Middle East shouldn't affect relationships between American Jews and American Muslims."

Nahum-Miller agrees that members have shied away from talking about the Middle East, but thinks that might become a topic for discussion should the group continue past this project.

The "Shaping Black Culture" initiative was started by Ernest Dilihay of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and has become an umbrella for many of the southland and world-wide organizations involved in bridging economic and cultural ties with Africa.

The Month of October has been deemed "African Diaspora Month" and will support the 6th region of Africa as recently defined by the African Union. The Department of Cultural Affairs both generates and supports high quality arts and cultural experiences for Los Angeles residents and visitors. Everybody knows Munch's painting The Scream. It is one of the most recognized images in modern art, on par with Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Picasso's Guernica. Hanji is believed to have roots in papermaking techniques invented in China. Books printed with moveable type on hanji paper predate the development of the printing press in Europe. Today, hanji is made by hand and industrially. In addition to its traditional use for painting, calligraphy, and other arts, it is made into house wares and small scale furniture. Boo Duck Lee states that because hanji is an organic material that is good for the skin, its use in clothing and bedding is increasing.

Lee lives in Jeonju, South Korea, the historical center of hanji production. At Kunjang University in Gunsan City, about 30 miles west, s ne teaches both paper art and digital textile design. In 2003, she founded Artex Design Laboratory, a "digital textile enterprise" within Kunjang College that manufactures and markets "Breitling Bentley GT Racing BT-96 goods and fashion accessories" designed by Lee and her industrial design students. Original art is scanned by computer and the image expanded into a repeating pattern which is printed on fabric, usually silk, and made into clothing and accessories. Lee's textile designs at Kobo represent a range of techniques and visual styles: drawings, watercolors, shibori (tie-dye) patterns, floral prints, and computer-generated graphics. Most of the pieces on display are neckties, plus a few scarves and articles of clothing. The scale and colors of the printed patterns vary from small and subdued to large and flamboyant. Every aspect of Lee's textile designs, from the high-tech production process to the wide range of colors and designs, is in striking contrast to her hanji paper sculpture. Taken together, the two bodies of work demonstrate an artist's ability to integrate tradition and innovation, to reconcile fine art with industry.

The exhibition at Kobo culminates Lee's summer spent as an artist-in-residence at Tacoma Community College, a sister school of Kunjang College. The two schools have hosted a number of faculty and student exchanges, but Lee's is the first artist residency.

Every year, artists travel to the ISNA Convention to showcase their creativity. This year, Nadia Janjua and Bassamat Bahnasy were among those participating in the ISNA Art Exhibit.

Janjua, who started painting and Breitling Bentley Midsize QUARTZ Chronograph BT-158 long before she could read or write, says art is a valuable form of expression. "God says that He loves beauty," she remarks, "and art is indeed beautiful." In explaining how art can help nurture compassionate communities, Janjua states, "Art is a form of expression that allows each artist to communicate the human condition to others through its ability to cross cultural, linguistic, and racial boundaries. We have all heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, and each piece of art, no matter what it is - painting, photography, or film - speaks novels and tells a unique story to each one of its readers." Artistic visions of a past once so rich have now become distant, and works representing one of the greatest regions and eras once hailed is now often overlooked - and perhaps forgotten - Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph BT-155 many. More than two centuries after the visual culture of Awadh reached the pinnacle of artistic fortitude with its myriad architectural designs, elaborately-crafted traditional courtly paintings, meticulous decorative arts and ornate textiles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has brought many of these works to the public eye with its exhibition, "India's Fabled City: The Art of Courtly Lucknow."

With nearly 200 works on display, "The Art of Courtly Lucknow" includes artworks; European oil paintings, watercolors and prints; Indian opaque textiles; garments; and Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph BT-155 decorative art objects ranging from metalwork and glassware to weaponry and jewelry.

On view from Dec. 12 through Feb. 27, "The Art of Courtly Lucknow" is the first-ever of its kind. Never has a major international exhibition devoted itself to presenting Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph BT-188 vastly rich yet uniquely cosmopolitan culture of Lucknow's court and the city's multiethnic residents and artists.

"Lucknow was the nexus point for one of the great dramas of history," LACMAs curator of South and Southeast Asian Art and department head Stephen Markel told India-West. "Not only were starkly diverse cultures competing with immense riches and political domination at stake, but the dynamic lead characters and brilliant aesthetic achievements all made for a deeply poignant era and vital artistic legacy."

Many of Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph BT-189 aesthetic achievements over the course of hundreds of years were vividly on display here at the Art of the Americas wing of LACMA, where "The Art of Courtly Lucknow" examines the height of the Mughal Empire in the northern Indian state of present-day Uttar Pradesh, where Lucknow - and one of India's most prominent dynasties - called home.

Once the provincial capital of Awadh (a territory within the Mughal Empire), Lucknow is home to many artistic and cultural artifacts defining a region, an era and a people. The city itself was considered the cultural center of northern India, a title that helped it overshadow the dynastic capital city of Delhi, from the mid-eighteenth century until the British established themselvers as colonial rulers of India in 1858.

In fact, according to scholarly research, Lucknow was the ultimate destination for Indian artists, poets and courtiers as well as European artists, travelers and political agents. Amongst Lucknow's most prominent draws included its wealth, opulence, nawabs (leaders), and overall geographic beauty.

Until now Pakistan's art scene has been largely private, hidden away in small galleries or elite living rooms. The curator of the current exhibition, Naiza Khan, who is herself a prominent artist, was determined to open contemporary art to a wider Pakistani public.

To do so she brought Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-178 important works by two of Pakistan's star contemporary artists, Rashid Rana and Imran Qureshi, from Dubai and Hong Kong (a painting by Mr Qureshi is shown below). She also invited contributions from two young artists--Abdullah Syed and Nusra Latif Qureshi--who work in Australia.

Mr Syed assembled a mobile of dozens of miniature drones made from box cutters, a silvery fleet of the American death machines that hunt and kill the Taliban in Pakistan's tribal areas. That many of the works deal with death and violence is hardly surprising. In Karachi alone more than 1,350 people have been killed in Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-179 streets so far this year, many of them in the drive-by shootings that have become the tragic hallmark of a war of ethnic rivalries.

But Ms Khan has been careful not to overdo the violence. In choosing the art, her emphasis is on exploring the urban condition of a country struggling to withstand a Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-214 complicated internal war. That means dealing not only with missiles and bombings but also with demographics, land usage and history.

In many respects, the exhibition demonstrates the maturing of the spirit that grew out of the artistic rebellion against the military dictatorship of General Zia ul Haq in the 1980s. In those years artists had to work furtively in hidden studios. In the early 1990s far-sighted art administrators struggled to expand Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-217 handful of art schools.

Now competition to get into such colleges is fierce. A young art entrepreneur, Umer Butt, whose gallery Grey Noise in Lahore lent works to the show, aspires to be an influential dealer. "Rising Tide" suggests that Pakistani artists do not have to go abroad, though some still do, to express their country's turmoil.

Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) is known for his smart pictures of New York City, finding formal elegance in sidewalk grates as well as in streetscapes of Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-218 buildings. The pictures of children at De Nagy haven't been shown before, and although the subject matter is not familiar, the Burckhardt touch is. The children in these 15 pictures were found in Tetuan, Morocco; Naples, Italy; Curacao; Mexico; Montgomery, Ala.; and Queens, N.Y. Most of them are street urchins, to use a contemporaneous term. What distinguishes the images is the sophisticated way Mr. Burckhardt placed the children in formal contexts related to their environment.

This exhibition at FIAF Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-219 pictures of Paris taken by three American photographers, and pictures of New York taken by three French photographers. The show celebrates the 30th anniversary of "Mois de la Photo" (Photography Month) in Paris, and the pictures themselves come from that city's La Maison Europeenne de la Photographie.

The three French photographers, Bernard Pierre Wolff (born 1930), Jeanloup Sieff (1933-2000) and Raymond Depardon (born 1942), were attracted to the sights on the Big Apple's streets. Mr. Sieff's witty "New York, 1964" has four faces: a woman and a man seen in the window of the bus they are riding, and Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-220 before and after pictures of a mustachioed gent in a Pepto-Bismol ad on the side of the bus. Two of Mr. Wolff's pictures feature timepieces: In "New York. Horloger, 1974" a man is seen at work in the window of a watch repair shop, and in "New York, 1984" a man who seems to have been done in by time is caught in front of a billboard painting of the face of a watch that is as big as he is.

The images in "Wijnanda Deroo: Inside New York Eateries" are about color and composition and fun. I assume Ms. Deroo was involved in hanging the exhibition, and anyone who Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chrono BT-221 allow "Tavern on the Green, Central Park, 2009" to be placed next to "Yonah Schimmel's Knishes, 137 Houston Street, 2009," and "Papaya Dog, 42nd & 9th Avenue, 2009" to bump up against "Cafe des Artistes, 1 West 67th Street, 2009" has a droll sense of humor. The Dutch photographer understands that restaurants are fictions we inhabit, stage sets on which we enact dramas of eating, and presents them in a stylish but straightforward manner, inviting us to select which roles we want to play.

The eateries are empty of diners, wait staff and cooks, except for one blurred figure behind the counter in the cavernous "Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant, Grand Central Terminal, 2009." But the tables are set in those restaurants that have napery, as if the curtain has just gone up and we are expected to make an entrance. Ms. Deroo's compositional approach is varied, and she appreciates the dark wood paneling in "The Oak Room, 10 Central Park South, 2009" as well as the gaudy Indian colors of "Milon, 93 First Avenue, 2009." The swank and the plebeian are treated with equal respect.

If one-of-akind is your signature style, check out the fine art at the Members' Show and Sale, opening Sunday at Wassenberg Art Center. There, one-of-akind is the only way they do art.

"It's a beautiful show and, literally, there is something for every taste here. We have a variety of works from abstract to realism," said Kay Sluterbeck, administrative manager for Pandora Gold Bead - J81 center.

Indeed, the annual exhibit displays Pandora Gold Bead - J66 original works of artists in a variety of fields, from painting to pottery, jewelry, woodcarving, glasswork and photography.

"It's a heck of an exhibit because you see everything here. For beginning artists, it's fun because they can get reactions to their work, and maybe sell some pieces. For the professional artists displaying work, it's a chance to sell some of their works to the public," Sluterbeck said.

She added that "we have a few Pandora Gold Bead - J86 come in just for this show. It's really fantastic. People who have walked in while we've been setting it up have really been wowed by it."

The annual event doubles as a fundraiser for Pandora Gold Bead - J25 center, with Wassenberg making a small commission on the sale of each piece.

"I always hate to see people shop at Walmart for a print of something that thousands of other people also own when they can come here and get something unique. No matter how much money you make, you can walk in here and see something nice in your price range," Sluterbeck said.

Since 1980, the pioneering sound-collage band and art collective Negativland has worked with appropriated sounds, objects, images and text - much of it taken from the realm of corporately owned popular culture.

At times, this practice has put the group on a collision course with copyright laws. In 1991, the band was sued by Island Records after using a U2 sample on a parody single as well as Pandora Gold Bead - JH letter "U" and numeral "2" on the song's cover art. Faced with the prospect of losing more money than they'd made in their entire careers, the band and its label at the time were forced to settle out of court, and the experience made its members advocates for copyright reform.

Now Heights gallery Nau-haus presents Negativland: Our Favorite Things, a survey of group members' collages and assemblages that also includes photo-based paintings, prints, album art, videos and models. Media literacy and wacky surrealism are common thematic staples of their work, which at its weakest has little to set Pandora Gold Bead - J12 apart from that of other assemblage artists.

Still, the show offers irrefutable visual evidence of just how much care, intelligence and creativity go into Negativland's work with appropriated material, thereby reinforcing the argument that current copyright laws can stifle the creation of art rather than protect artists' rights.

Often members - the collective Pandora Gold Bead - J72 included between three and six people at various points - will hang on to a found, or in some cases inherited, object before giving it the right visual mash-up to call home.

Their survey has found Pandora Gold Bead - J41 right home at Nau-haus, where gallery owner and kindred spirit Dan Mitchell Allison has filled the walls with a loving installation of their richly varied output.
